The House of the Dulay Mendoza Clan of Marikina Valley, a Lakan Dula Heritage

The house, with the smell of dama de noche at night, with grape vines, an old basketball court and balete tree -- is the official residence of the hereditary leader of the Dulay Mendoza Clan of Marikina Valley. It is found in the poblacion of Marikina near the old municipal hall and the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Our Lady of the Abandoned, also known as Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados or Ina ng mga Walang Mag-Ampon, Marikina City, a Roman Catholic church and the home of an image of the Virgin Mary venerated locally, which has received Papal recognition. After the Papal recognition, the image stayed in the Dulay Mendoza Clan house for one week, with daily novenas and rosary, culminating into a street mass before it was returned to the nearby Our Lady at the Abandoned Church. After the street mass in front of the clan house, the hereditary leader of the Dulay Mendoza clan served the worshippers led by former Philippine Vice Presidential  candidate Bayani Fernando, Marikina Mayor Marcy Teodoro and former Marikina Mayor Marides Fernando, with dinner of waknatoy (a native Marikina dish) and other native dishes. Until now, the image has never stayed for one week to any house near the church again.

Poblacion is a Spanish word which means the center of civilization. In Spain, a poblacion is composed of an old Church, a plaza, a municipio and the ilustrado families around the church. This is the same pattern the Spaniards did in the in the Philippines. The ilustrados (konyo in today’s term) are usually the descendants of the prayle, guardia civil, native nobility, governadorcillos, principalia and the kabise or chinese businessmen. They are usually good looking, rich, politically connected, educated and cultured.

The clan house is found in Isabelo Mendoza St., San Roque, Marikina City in the barangay where the house of the owner of Hacienda Marikina, the Tuason family, exists even today; and  the street where one can also find the Shoe Museum and famous fallen century - old Acacia tree, the old municipal hall (now occupied by the Red Cross), the Butiki Park, the Isabelo's Secret, and the Teatro Marikina; ancestral houses of the Mendozas of the lineage of Don Benito Mendoza, the founder and first gobernadorcillo of Marikina, and where you can hear the church bells of the nearby  Nuestra Senora de los Desamparados.

The unity of Dulay and Mendoza families in Marikina Valley was mentioned partly by J.Antonio Mendoza y González, in  Daluyan : A Historical Dictionary of the Streets of Manila, Printed by NHI, as follows:

“The Tioco family was a very rich and generous family from Old Tondo. They owned numerous fishing boats in Tondo and Malabon. Siblings Balbino Tioco and Romana Tioco were illustrious citizens and famous Tondo benefactors of the 19th century.

Balbino’s son Maximiano was kidnapped in the late 19th century and ransomed for 3 “kaings” of gold. Maximiano was married to a spanish mestiza Marciana Félix (same Félix family as Joji Félix Velarde and Conchita Félix wife of Felipe Calderón of the Malolos Constitution)

Maximiano married Teodorica Ylo (The Cabangis family are also descended from the Ylo’s) They bore 5 children, Nemesio, Salvador, “Beot”, Guadalupe (married to Don Eduardo Barretto), Consuelo (married to Dr Rufino Mendoza, son of Don Isabelo Mendoza de Villablanca, a direct descendant of the spaniard Don Benito Mendoza, first gobernadorcillo of Mariquina in 1787. Benito’s (daughter?) Juana Mendoza Cerbito married Ceferino Dulay, a patriarch of the Rajah Lakandula/Dulay clan.

Long after the family had left Old Tondo for the plush villages of Makati and other parts of Manila, there remains Calle Romana* in honor of Romana Tioco, and Calle Tioco* in honor of Balbino and Romana, two personages of the same family in gratitude for their inexhaustible generosity to Tondo. The clan house is the place where the “Dine with the Ancestors Rituals” are being held among the key descendants of Lakan Dula. The "Dine with the Ancestor" ritual is a tradition exclusively among the descendants of Lakan Dula from all over the archipelago whenever they visit the clan house of Lakan Dula  descendants in Marikina Valley. It is done with grapes, red wine served in the 16th century plate passed over from Lakan Dula household to David Dula y de Goiti, to Petre Dulay, to Ceferino Dulay and now to Sofronio Dulay l, and in the future to Sofronio Dulay ll -- the bloodline of the eldest sons of Lakan Dula descendants. The ritual starts with grapes on two antique plates from the household of Lakan Dula and a bottle French red wine on top of an antique baul, lighting of a candle lamp,  and an antique bayonet used by Ceferino Rivas Dulay when he was still in the guerilla movement against the Japanese army. Free wheeling talks with reigning and secretive clan leader Sofronio Dulay l will happen while partaking with the grapes and red wine. One of the rituals which include the world renown arnis guru Bambit Dulay  was televised in a popular national TV show, I - Witness, hosted by a well known TV host Sandra Aguinaldo on January 2018 entitled "Kaharian ng Tondo", with around a million views now in the You Tube. 

The Dulay Mendoza Clan of Marikina Valley was specifically mentioned in the ancient genealogy of the Gatbunton Clan of the Kingdom of Tondo. In the clan house, visitors can also find what the folks are calling the "ANG ALAMAT NG MESA NG MGA ALKALDE" because the last Four Elected Mayors of Marikina has dined in that table: Bayani Flores Fernando, Marides Reyes Carlos, Del Reyes de Guzman and Marcy Reyes Teodoro.

The clan house has been a favorite shooting venue for indie films, tv drama series, documentaries mostly about Lakan Dula and the Kingdom of Tondo, commercials and student projects on Noli Me Tangere and El Felibusterismo. Some folks in the neighborhood fondly call the house as "bahay ni Rizal or bahay ni Lakan Dula" because of its antique ambience. It is also the corporate office of the CDM Foundation which main concern is to consolidate the descendants of Lakan Dula scattered in the whole Philippine archipelago and in other countries, and to do further research on the Kingdom of Tondo Manila and the Lakanate of Lawan. It is also the office of Marikina News Facebook Group with 176,000 members and the Ceferino and Juana Dulay Children, Grandchildren and In - Laws (Dulay Mendoza) FB group, the main Facebook group exclusively of the reigning family of the descendants.

Esdee, Julia and Sophia were selected by the College of Law from among their students.The national competition will be held late this year...may the legend and luck of this table give the bets of UP College of Law the lucky marching order. I – Juander of GMA 7 Features the last King of Tondo

On September 8, 2017, a top rating public affair program of GMA 7 popularly known as "I – Juander" presented an episode on the last King of the Kingdom of Tondo Manila, Lakan Bunao Dula. GMA is looking for descendant of Lakan Dula who will tell the research about the history of the Kingdom of Tondo, about the life of Lakan Dula and about some historical places in Tondo. They called up the hereditary leader of the Dulay Clan of Marikina Valley. He refused because he is not a historian but a management professor. Instead he referred the TV network to CHED Chairman Popoy de Vera, a history graduate, who also refused; and to Delmar Taclibon, a PhD graduate who did not answer the call of the network. The GMA went to other historians but requested for an interview with the Dulay Clan leader in Marikina to get the point of view of the descendants, who finally agreed.

"I -Juander" is a local TV show in the Philippines which airs every Wednesday at 8:00PM to 9:00PM on GMA News TV Channel 11. Featuring trends in the society and interesting lifestyle topics, veteran GMA reporters Susan Enriquez and Cesar Apolinario try to answer what makes us Filipino by demystifying and investigating the origins of different aspects of Filipino culture. The show is both fun and informative, one that suits all ages. Susan is chiefly known for two things: her fast-paced yet meaty reporting (a skill she picked up from working in radio) and her down-to-earth, likeable personality. With her experience in radio and television reporting, six years of hosting the magazine program ‘Kay Susan Tayo!’ and her current stint as co-host of “I Juander,’ it’s hard to imagine she was ever disliked. But her success today is the product of hard work and determination in the face of immense difficulties. On the other hand, first-time director and GMA News reporter Cesar Apolinario beat the likes of Joey Reyes and Joel Lamangan for the Best Director award for his debut film Banal in the 2007 Metro Manila Film Festival Awards Night. 

The interest shown by national media on the Kingdom of Tondo and its last King, Lakan Bunao Dula is an indication that the Filipinos wanted to dig more about its pre – Hispanic past.

Lakan Bunao Dula (royal title: Lakan; first name: Bunao; surname: Dula) was a native muslim king of Tundun (a large area covering most of what is now present-day Metro Manila), when the Spanish colonization of the Philippine Islands had begun. He was born on December 16, 1503 and died on March 21, 1589 of old age. He ruled a community of Muslim people who lived north of the Pasig River.Lakan Dula was one of three Muslim chieftains in the Manila during the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors led by Martín de Goiti, and Juan de Salcedo in 1570. Lakan Dula was the regnal name of the last Lakan (king or paramount ruler) of the pre-colonial Kingdom of Tondo when the Spaniards first conquered the lands of the Pasig River delta in what is now the Philippines in the 1570s.

        The firsthand account of Spanish Royal Notary Hernando Riquel says that he introduced himself to the Spanish as "Lakan Bunao Dula", indicating that his given name was "Bunao". He later converted to Christianity and was baptised Lakan Carlos Dula. Two among his children were bestowed to inherit the royal surname Dula, the eldest and heir apparent Batang Dula, and Martin Lakan Dula. The rest adopted different native sounding surnames. Another common variation of the name is Gat Dula (alternatively spelled as a single word, Gatdula). He is sometimes erroneously referred to as Rajah Lakandula, but the terms "Rajah" and "Lakan" have the same meaning, and in this domain the native Lakan title was used, making the use of both "Rajah" and "Lakandula" at the same time redundant and erroneous.

    The full episodes of 'I-Witness' are aired every Saturday night on GMA Network. These award-winning documentaries are hosted and presented by the most trusted broadcast journalists in the country: Sandra Aguinaldo, Kara David, Howie Severino, Jay Taruc, and Atom Araullo.

   On January 20, 2018, a Sandra Aguinaldo – hosted documentary entitled: I-Witness: 'Kaharian ng Tundo,' dokumentaryo ni Sandra Aguinaldo was aired nationwide through GMA Network and in a matter of 2 months, it already have more than half million views in You Tube and more than 500 comments. This viewership is a sign that the Filipinos are all craving for information about their pre –Hispanic past.

    

     One of the highlights of the documentary was a plan to interview a living high ranking descendant of Lakan Bunao Dula, the last King of the Kingdom of Tondo Manila and asks for his views about the kingdom. The search led to the Dulay Mendoza House in Marikina Valley where the 5^th Hereditary Leader of the Dulay Mendoza Clan of Marikina Valley resides. The clan leader initially declined the interview because they have a scheduled “Dine with the Ancestor Ritual” among Arnis gurus lead by Samuel Bambit Dulay on that day but it was agreed that the ritual will never be disturbed but will be part of the episode. The other resource persons in the episode was Prof. Nancy Kimwell - Gabriel, a UP Historian; and Dr. Robby Tangtinco, Executive Director of the Center for Kapampangan Studies.

    There are several comments on the episode. Some Muslims took notice that it was never emphasized in the show that Lakan Bunao Dula, being the grandson of Bolkiah, is a Muslim. Others are taking issues on what is Tondo today, including the fact that the head of the Dulay Mendoza Clan of Marikina Valley, a Lakan Dula descendant who was featured, is not residing anymore in Tondo, signifying that the Kingdom of Tondo has long been abandoned. The interview of the UP historian in the episode pointed out the fact that Tondo is the oldest Kingdom of the Philippines, older than any among Muslim, Spanish, American and Japanese rule and it is also the cradle of national heroes like Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio and Macario Sakay.

Good afternoon to the Arnis Grandmasters, Lakans, Participants and Organizers of the 9^th Filipino Martial Arts World Festival 2018.

We say this welcome in behalf of the descendants of Lakan Bunao Dula, the last king of the ancient Kingdom of Tondo Manila.

The civilization of the Philippines started from the tropical waters of the Pacific Ocean into our shores and rivers, along with the emergence of other civilizations of the world. In January 2018, it was announced that modern human finds at Misliya cave, Israel, in 2002, had been dated to around 185,000 years ago, the earliest evidence of their out of Africa migration. The earliest homo sapiens (AMH) found in Europe are the "Cro-Magnon" man, beginning at about 40,000 to 35,000 years ago. At around the same time, the human beings already existed in the Philippine archipelago as evidenced by the Tabon and Callao men.  Archaeologists believe that the 67,000 years old Callao man discovered in a Philippine cave near the Pacific Ocean could be the oldest human in Asia Pacific alongside with the Australian findings that the Polynesians may have the Philippines as their homeland. The earliest men of Israel and the Philippines might have been already in contact long before men in Europe emerged,  that is why there are the current findings that the Philippines is actually the Ophir that was mentioned in the Bible. An ancient and prosperous settlement in the Pacific, Laoang Isands in Samar  (derived from Samaria) at the far end of the Kingdom of Tondo was populated by a mysterious warlike tribe headed by Datu Iberein (a Hebrew name), according to a book written by historian William Henry Scott. 

The Kingdom of Tondo Manila is the earliest Kingdom of the Philippines with historical records dating back to 900 century, way ahead than the Muslims, Spanish, Americans and Japanese occupations of the country. The oldest monarchy in the world is the Yamato dynasty of Japan which traces its origins back to 660, making it the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy. They are only a couple of century ahead of the Kingdom of Tondo Manila.

The head of our kingdom is called Lakan, or the "paramount ruler". Arnis was the  martial arts of our ancient kingdom and one of the present - day advocates of the art is my cousin and fellow Lakan Dula descendant Samuel Bambit Dulay;  the art is as ancient as the “tinalak” cloth weaving championed by another dear cousin Lang Dulay; and Baybayin alphabet being championed at present time by my fellow Lakan Dula descendant in Marikina Valley, Pastor Jay Enage.

Because all of you are the gurus of Arnis all over the world, our ancient Kingdom bestowed upon you the Lakan Bunao Dula Medallion, and later on this evening you will be invited to a “Dine with the Ancestors Ritual” over antiques plates that has been passed on to us from the ancient household of Lakan Dula -- as a sign of the ancient Philippine Kingdom giving all of you a warm welcome; and commanding you to be the Lakans or paramount rulers of warriors in your own settlements in your part of the world.

The ablest warriors of our ancient Kingdom have mastered Arnis through trainings and actual battles. They are the leaders of our people, headed by our Lakan.

With the Lakan Bunao Dula Medallion, you are the paramount leader of warriors who have gained the mastery of Arnis through discipline, training and creativity right in your own homeland.

Giving of Medallions to selected Arnis Guru coming from different parts of the World. The highest award given to blackbelters of ancient Filipino martial arts, Arnis, is a Lakan Bunao Dula Medallion. The awarding ceremony was done at the Luneta Park with Prof. Toti Dulay, a descendant of Lakan Dula, giving the inspirational message and presiding over the awarding of medallions. The following Dalubhasang Rank Arnisadores were the awardees: Samuel Bambit Dulay (a descendant of Lakan Dula),Dieter Knuettel, Juerg Ziegler, Brian Zawilinski, Paulo O. Later in the evening, Prof. Dulay presided over the "Dine with the Ancestors Ritual" among the awardees and special guests. The ritual is historically done exclusively among the living descendants of Lakan Dula in the Dulay Mendoza House in Marikina Valley but this ritual broke a tradition for the first time when it was done among the Arnis advocates and grand masters of the ancient Filipino martial arts worldwide -- done in an undisclosed historical restaurant somewhere near the ancient Kingdom of Tondo.

The National Historical Institute of the Philippines says that Dulay came from David Dula y Goiti, descendant of Lakan Dula, pre hispanic king of Manila. Because of Hispanic prosecution, the clan sent their offsprings to different parts of the country and of the world using the Galleon Trade route and the chinese traders to places within sea routes. Dula y Goiti , because of hatred to the Spaniards,removed the goiti part and therefore Dula y or Dulay remained. Today, you can see Dulay all over the world, France, India, England, US, Europe and in the Philippines. In the Philippines being the root, you can see Dulay in Manila (Tondo, Manila was the seat of the kingdom of Lakan Dula), Marikina, Northern Samar, La Union, Pangasinan, Quirino, Pampanga, Bulacan, Mindanao,etc. All people carrying the surname Dulay all over the world are related. In the Philippines, President Diosdado Macapagal and President Gloria Arroyo are descendant of Lakan Dula.In fact you can feel the closeness of the Dulay to each other because if you meet a fellow Dulay, you can feel a surge of blood affinity right there and there.
